About Us

The Citizenship Initiative (CI), is a unique multi-issue, multi-partner enterprise. Our goal is to re-imagine the concept of citizenship and discover how it can be applied in a globalizing world. We seek to advance research and address civic challenges throughout the world. We address the concepts of citizenship and civil society from issues of trust within and across societies; legitimacy of government nationally and regionally; rule of law and group allegiances (for example, in tribal societies); the place of minorities and gender groups; linkages (and tensions) between democracy and human rights; religion and the future of civil society; civil-military relations and the changing character of war; to the effects of globalization, culturally, politically and economically, on the shaping of societies.

CI, located in the College of Arts and Sciences has brought in several million dollars in grant funded research from AFOSR and other academic and military entities. CI provides interdisciplinary research opportunities, including hosting workshop and conferences and supports interdisciplinary collaborations with other departments and faculty.
